Comparative tribological and friction behaviors of oil-lubricated manganese phosphate conversion coatings with different crystal sizes on AISI 52100 steel

Abstract In this study, manganese phosphate conversion coatings of different thicknesses are prepared on the AISI 52100 steel surface. The tribological properties of the coatings are investigated using an SRV-V multifunctional tribometer, and the microstructure and interfacial components are analyzed through scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results show that the friction coefficients of Mn–P[B] and Mn–P[H] coatings are reduced by 6% and 15%, respectively. Moreover, the EP load resistance is improved by 37% with low-viscosity lubrication oil. Under a high load, the Mn–P coatings may affect the wear mechanism of matching steel surfaces and reduce their degree of wear. The wear surface is smooth and has several uniform oil-storage holes, which are crucial to oil film formation and sustained wear resistance.
