Spatial Patterns of Selenium and Profiling of Se-Tolerant Bacillus Strains in Shiwalik Foot-Hills

Abstract An excessive concentration of selenium has been documented in several parts of Punjab in India. The present research has been conceptualized to determine selenium's spatial distribution in the foot-hill region of Shiwaliks. Nine seasonal rivulets (Choes) originating from Shiwalik hills were selected with the range of altitude between 566 and 1996 meters above mean sea level. The aerial distance between first (SB-1) and ninth (SB-9) rivulets was calculated slightly more than 16 km. These tributaries merge with the drainage basins of the south-west flowing rivers of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Nine samples of sediments were collected from these Choes and analyzed for various physicochemical characteristics and selenium to establish their synergetic and antagonistic relationship with selenium mobility. Maximum selenium concentration (2.918 µg/g) has been spotted in the sediment sample (SB-2), while minimum concentration (0.003 µg/g) was spotted in an SB-9 sediment sample. The alkaline nature (pH 7.7–8.5) of the sediments leads to enhance the mobility of the heavy metals significantly. Fourteen selenium tolerant bacterial strains were segregated from these sediment samples and were categorized based on their ability to grow differentially on selenium oxyanions. Further, six bacterial strains were characterized and identified as Bacillus sp. using the 16S rRNA gene sequence.
