Abstract In previous research, the domain of food has been the main test case for examining children’s use of evaluation as a basis for conceptual organization. The present research investigates how children’s evaluative category representation of foods compare to the domains of animals, artifacts, plants, and people. Three studies were conducted with children (N = 176, range = 3;22 – 8;78 years) involving categorization tasks. Results reveal domain similarity in younger and older children’s developing ability for evaluative categorization. Results also demonstrate domain differences in younger and older children’s tendency to categorize based on evaluative versus taxonomic relations. Applications of these findings are discussed within the context of methods to enhance children’s healthy food choices and consumption.
