Abstract

Mono-, di-, and trimethylation of histone H3K4 in neurons of the mushroom bodies, the structures responsible for learning and memory in insects, were studied in a honeybee. It was shown that, 1 h after training, the number of neurons containing methylated modifications of histone H3—H3K4me1, H3K4me2, and H3K4me3—increases, which is probably associated with transcription activation during this period, while no differences from control were observed 24 h after training. This study contributes to an understanding of the epigenetic mechanisms of memory formation.
