Immunoexpression of c-Kit in the Mice Hippocampal Subgranular Zone, a Possible Role of Hematopoietic Stem Cells in the Subgranular Zone Neurogenesis

Abstract

Mammalian hippocampus hosts neural stem cells in the subgranular zone. Here, the neural stem cells are the source of neurogenesis, that happens throughout the lifetime. However, studies show that undifferentiated cells from varied lineage also shape the environment. In the present study, the expression of c-Kit, a marker for hematopoietic stem cells was studied in the mice hippocampal subgranular zone. Immunohistochemistry and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction were performed on 12 week-old mice hippocampal tissues. The data shows that c-Kit is present in the mice hippocampus and in the subgranular zone. Therefore, suggesting a possible role of hematopoietic stem cells in the subgranular zone neurogenesis.
