Here, we briefly elaborate the advances in currently emerging functional materials under high pressure from our own viewpoints. Pressure engineering can be successfully adopted to boost the corresponding properties of typical functional materials, including superhard materials (I), superconducting hydrogen-rich materials (II), negative compressibility materials (III), perovskite-based optoelectronic materials (IV), thermoelectric materials (V), high-energy density materials (VI), and catalytic materials (VII). Those enhanced performances were not generally available to access under ambient conditions, except for the application of high pressure. We finally conclude this perspective with discussions of current challenges and future outlook for those materials under high pressure with promising properties. We truly hope that this timely paper can serve as a trigger and inspire new endeavors in the scientific community, thus promoting further development of the material science at extremes.
