On June 6, 2020, we asserted a number of principles following the initial publication, and rapid retraction, of “‘Organic synthesis—Where now?’ is 30 years old. A reflection on the current state of affairs” in Angewandte Chemie, International Edition. The following statement thus appears on the shared JOC and OL Twitter account (@JOC_OL) and at that maintained by Organometallics (@Orgmet_ACS), and we wish to publish this statement now in our journals for perpetuity: “The Editors-in-Chief of The Journal of Organic Chemistry, Organic Letters, and Organometallics affirm their commitment to the intrinsic scientific excellence that is borne of contributions from the most diverse pool of scientists. Inspired by the capacity of all to contribute, we strive for openness and inclusion in all we do, hoping to learn from all in an effort to better serve our field, the entire scientific enterprise, and our global society. Moreover, we reject backwardness and any effort to repress the contributions of individuals historically underrepresented in our field.” We, along with all of the Editors-in-Chief for each of the ACS Publications journals, have since published an editorial, entitled “Confronting Racism in Chemistry Journals”. In addition, Professor Melanie S. Sanford has written a powerful editorial with concrete actions for accelerated remediation of the cultural problems in science (DOI: 10.1021/acscentsci.0c00784). Furthermore, ACS has issued a statement regarding recent tragic events in support of diversity and inclusion. And the ACS Axial post by Dr. Pamela Tadross is also an outstanding resource, featuring excellent and actionable ideas. Sarpong et al. have now written an excellent and compelling editorial published alongside this editorial, the principles of which we wholeheartedly endorse (DOI: 10.1021/acs.joc.0c01607). Along with these calls to action, we, as the Editors of The Journal of Organic Chemistry, Organic Letters, and Organometallics, are publicizing and rededicating several core policies, while implementing several new steps to maximize the diversity of our discipline and the unique contributions and capacities of our expansive disciplines and communities. First, state-of-the-art training and continuing education will become an integral part of our board meetings involving all of our editors. These will include sessions moderated by leading experts on racism, bias, and implicit bias so that all of our editors and editorial staff members may learn and benefit from the excellence, knowledge, and best practices emerging from the work of these professionals. Second, we will continue to work with ACS Publications to understand better the diversity presently represented in our author and reviewer communities in a data driven fashion. These efforts will include an effort to understand our own behaviors in reviewer selection, engagement in the appeals process with contended manuscript decisions, and selection of articles for featured content. We are committed to transparency in these activities, and we pledge to share any lessons learned with the broader community, along with action items we can implement based on our findings. Third, we will recommit to constructive and educational interaction with authors, editors, and reviewers. As a first step, we will add to our reviewer invitation a link to the recommended ACS online training course “Reviewer Lab” (https://acsreviewerlab.org), which includes numerous components that enhance the fairness of the peer review process, including a module on ethics and biases to be aware of in the review process. Fourth, we are encouraging authors to engage with our Author Guidelines, which offer useful information with respect to enhancing fairness, diversity, and excellence in the review process, including, for example, the following guideline: “Please suggest five reviewers. ACS requests that you consider the gender and geographic diversity of your suggested reviewers in addition to their topical expertise. Authors are encouraged to avoid suggesting reviewers from the authors’ institutions. Do not suggest reviewers who may have a real or perceived conflict of interest.” Fifth, we remain committed to maintaining a high level of diversity on our Associate Editor teams and on our Editorial Advisory Boards. Sixth, we aim to provide an opportunity for everyone to get to know our authors. It seems that although social media allows us to stay connected, it is limited in its ability to foster connections at a more personal level. Accordingly, building on the innovations of Organometallics (https://pubs.acs.org/page/orgnd7/pioneers-influencers), authors of papers in JOC and OL will be invited to submit a profile, along with the option to include a photograph that highlights the team that made the science happen; an accompanying caption with the photograph can identify the individuals of the team and short details (e.g., undergraduate, graduate student, postdoc). This underscores the team effort that always accompanies advances in science and will serve to shine a light on the diversity of the research enterprise. In parallel, with this activity, the journals will periodically feature authors with short biographies that highlight their career paths and may underscore decisive moments on the multitude of roads taken (and roads not taken) that we all experience over the course of our careers. We anticipate these venues will provide rich opportunities to celebrate the diversity of our community of chemists that collectively continues to propel the field forward in exciting new directions. Finally, and not at all as an afterthought, we welcome your input and suggestions. Our role as Editors-in-Chief is a service role first and foremost. We look forward to working with the entire community of organic and organometallic chemists to create scientific opportunity, through advancing and promoting our shared fields, with the benefit of the wisdom of all. Contact us at JOC ([email protected]), Org. Lett., ([email protected]), or Organometallics ([email protected]). Views expressed in this editorial are those of the authors and not necessarily the views of the ACS. This Editorial is jointly published in Organic Letters, The Journal of Organic Chemistry, and Organometallics. This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
