Mild steel green inhibition by Hardwickia binata Roxb. leaves extract in acid medium

Abstract The intent of this paper is to investigate the leaves extract of Hardwickia binata Roxb. (HBL) as corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in aerated 1 M HCl and 0.5 M H2SO4 solutions using weight loss and electrochemical techniques. Increasing the immersion period of the system enhanced inhibition efficiency of HBL extract in 1 M HCl, but decreased efficiency in 0.5 M H2SO4. The stability and durability of the extract was evaluated under room temperature (RT) and refrigerated condition (RC) by weight loss method. The results show that HBL extract was found to inhibit both cathodic and anodic partial reactions of the corrosion process, proving the extract as mixed-type inhibitor. The morphology of the surface of the specimens was analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and optical laser Profilometric studies. The possible mode of corrosion inhibition of HBL extract was derived using FT-IR studies.
