Some underwater sceneries, like Paramuricea clavata communities in the Mediterranean (photo by Pol Capdevila), look pretty much like terrestrial landscapes. Yet aquatic ant terrestrial environments display stark differences in their environmental conditions and evolutionary history. For that reason, Capdevila et al.’s study, “Longevity, body dimension and reproductive mode drive differences in aquatic versus terrestrial life‐history strategies” (Funct Ecol. 2020; 34: 1613–1625.https://doi.org/10.1111/1365-2435.13604), examines whether and how such similarities and distinctness between aquatic and terrestrial environments influenced the evolution of species’ life histories.
