A house‐cleaning enzyme: That the essential, cellular cofactor (Ss,Sc)‐S‐adenosylmethionine (SAM) can spontaneously racemize to the inactive (Rs,Sc)‐SAM remains underappreciated. We show that a protein containing a domain of unknown function 62 (DUF62) from the marine bacterium S. tropica acts as a stereoselective (Rs,Sc)‐SAM hydrolase, potentially representing a novel mechanism to maintain SAM homochirality.
