AB Andromedae – An Overcontact Eclipsing Binary

Abstract In an effort to resolve the discrepancy between two earlier studies, new radial velocity and photometric data have been obtained and analyzed by Roche modelling for AB Andromedae, an overcontact W-subtype eclipsing binary. The new values for the basic data, m1 = 0.60 (3) Mʘ, m2 = 1.14 (3) Mʘ, R1 = 0.81 (1) Rʘ, R2 = 1.08 (1) Rʘ, L1 = 0.73 (6) Lʘ, and L2 = 1.02 (7) Lʘ, mostly lie close to a given set of previously reported values, but in some cases show small but significant differences. The latter may reflect the real errors in derived quantities, as opposed to estimated errors (quoted here and elsewhere), the latter of which sometimes underestimate the true values. A distance estimate of r = 116 (8) pc was obtained, in poor agreement with the Gaia value of 85.24 (26) pc. In addition, a new period analysis is presented using updated eclipse times, resulting in a new light time effect (LiTE) fit. Magnetic cycles, due to the Applegate effect, are likely present.
