Novel spirobifluorene derivatives bearing two and four sulfonamidopicolyl groups were successfully synthesized by Sonogashira couplings. These strongly emissive compounds showed a good selective fluorescent quenching by Au(III) ion in acidic aqueous media solution with three-time-noise detection limits of 9.8 and 86.8 nM. The data from 1H-NMR, UV–vis spectroscopy, and the observation of the Tyndall effect strongly supported a static aggregation-induced quenching mechanism. The application of these sensors for quantitative analysis of spiked Au(III) ion in real water samples from 5 different sources resulted in excellent recoveries.
