Properties of Poly-vinyl Alcohol Bonded Jute (Corchorus olitorius) Nonwoven Fabric and Its Performance as Disposable Carry Bag

ABSTRACT

The functional properties of jute adhesive-bonded 120 g/m2 nonwoven fabric were studied considering three process parameters, i.e. adhesive concentration, squeezing pressure, and curing temperature using central composite rotatable design considering the use of that fabric in disposable light-weight carry bag. Mathematical models have been proposed for each functional property. The models can be used to predict and discuss the properties satisfactorily. The contour diagrams help to design a jute adhesive-bonded fabric for carry bag. To get the optimum functional properties of 120 g/m2 fabric, the process parameters was 20% adhesive concentration, 1.2 N/cm2 squeezing pressure and 120°C curing temperature. Comparison with commercial fabric showed that the properties of the developed fabric are better for using as carry bag. The performance of the developed bag in hanging test, repeated wetting test, drop test, and atmospheric test is better compared to commercial plastic carry bag. The developed PVA bonded jute nonwoven disposable carry bags as compared to plastic carry bag are heavier in weight, costlier and prone to more moisture absorption not having any water-repellent/water proof character.
