Fragmentation of Nonmetallic Inclusions during Local Remelting upon Laser Steel Processing

Abstract In this paper, we study the features of partial dissolution and contact melting of nonmetallic inclusions under conditions of anomalous mass transfer that promotes their fragmentation in the surface layer of hardened steel products. The mechanisms and conditions for laser melting of inclusions, mechanical destruction of solid and liquid inclusions, and the formation of satellite particles are discussed. Inclusion fragmentation upon laser processing is shown to determine the steel hardening level. Based on a study of fast melting and solidification, laser processing changes the structure and properties of nonmetallic inclusions in the surface hardened layers of steel products. The use of the obtained results will allow the development of laser processing modes, thus affecting the size, structure, distribution and content of nonmetallic inclusions in the hardened layers of the products.
