Oxidative Refining of Platinum–Rhodium Alloys from Impurities

Abstract

The pyrometallurgical refining of platinum–rhodium alloys from a contaminating copper impurity during induction remelting in the presence of oxygen is studied. Atomic emission analysis data for a platinum–rhodium alloy at each cycle of refining are presented. The results of atomic absorption, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray energy dispersive, X-ray diffraction, and thermal analyses for the contact layer formed during refining are discussed. The kinetic features of the reactions between the components during refining are considered. The influence of the dispersion of the refining powder on the reaction rates is described.
