Insect aggregation pheromones may be applied in monitoring traps for pest control. Wenninger & Eigenbrode initially identified a nine-compound blend, with (R)-( )2-nonanol as the major attractive component, that lures sugar beet root maggot fly, Tetanops myopaeformis (von R€ oder) (Diptera: Ulidiidae). They now further simplify the blend and optimize the dose, while maximizing field capture rates. Standard sticky traps baited with racemic 2nonanol increased captures of both males and females. This relatively simple and cheap tool may now be used to monitor and control this important sugar beet pest in IPM programmes.
