Microwave Beam Bifurcation in an Inhomogeneous Plasma: Modeling by Ray Methods

Abstract

Modification of the beam tracing method for numerical simulations is proposed that allows one to use it in the zones of the microwave beam bifurcation, which is accompanied by the linear mode transformation. The theoretical basis for this modification is the switching over to the hybrid spatial-spectral representation of two beams, within which both the beam axes coincide and, therefore, the paraxial approximation is still valid. The initial parameters of the beam split off from the “parent” beam are determined, and the equations are derived connecting the beam amplitudes in the bifurcation zone with each other.
