Influence of the Breeding System on the Nucleotides Variability of Melanocortin-4 Receptor ( MC4r ) Gene in Chinchillas ( Chinchilla lanigera )

Abstract

The melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4r) located in the hypothalamus is an important element of the signaling pathway involved in the regulation of animal energy homeostasis. There are numerous cases of variability of the MC4r gene that cause the appearance of desirable features from the point of view of breeding progress. In this study, the sequences of the MC4r gene were determined, a series of SNP variations were found in both the coding and non-coding regions of the gene.Two equipotent herds of chinchillas, breeding in accordance with open or closed nucleus program, were examined for the presence of identified variations. It was found that between analyzed herds occurs statistically significant differences in the frequency of genotypes and in the abundance of genetic pools. A potentially significant in terms of breeding process polymorphism c.-136G>A in 5'UTR MC4r gene was observed in both herds.
