Salvadora persica root extract-mediated fabrication of ZnO nanoparticles and characterization

Abstract

Biocompatibility of nanoparticles (NPs) uses the plant extract as a reducing agent for synthesis and are cost-effective. The existing research focused on fabrication of zinc oxide (ZnO) NPs using Salvadora persica L. root extract as a reducing agent and noticed that varying the extraction solvent varies the morphology of ZnO NPs. The existence of alkaloids, acids, volatiles, and essential oils in root extract helps in ZnO NPs fabrications from its precursor zinc acetate dihydrate. The calcined resultant nanopowders are then characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, and SEM. SEM analysis showed the ZnO NPs have hexagonal wurtzite structure in aqueous dispersion medium while nanorods formed in methanol. The synthesized ZnO NPs crystallite size found 24–25 nm. Besides the function of oral hygiene and various properties of Miswak, it can be employed for the ZnO NPs synthesis. These ZnO NPs with different morphology can be used in medical applications, biosensors, photochemical, and electrical applications.
