We are currently entering a new era, the Anthropocene, where the individual and collective impacts of human civilization are drastically changing Earth systems on a global scale. Human populations grow worldwide in ways that are disproportionately great in coastal and urban areas. The development pathways currently evolving in coastal zones have global impacts. Humanity’s ability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and remain within the limits of planetary boundaries will largely rely on our capacity to create new and mobilize existing knowledge-to-action through novel networking approaches.
