Some efforts in developing sustainable processes for integrated production of chemicals and fuels in fat and oil based biorefineries

In order to produce chemicals and fuels in a sustainable way it is necessary today to design new reactions, methods and production processes safely, flexible and efficiently. The use of different biomass and wastes as raw materials have been pointed out as an elegant solution to partially or completely substitute petroleum. Our research group has been developing several technologies that use fatty materials as inputs to obtain hydrocarbons, esters and polymers, among others, which are suitable to be used in lubricants, fuels and paintings formulations. Indeed, we have been developing processes using refined and crude fats and oils obtained from agribusiness and forest extractivism, as well as industrial and urban wastes. In this article, it is intended to discuss the studies carried out in the development of processes of modification of fatty materials to obtain chemicals and macromolecules using thermal and/or chemical transformations.
