Effect of combustion chamber material on the performance of an improved biomass cookstove

Increased material efficiency in cookstove designs aids in reduction of specific fuel consumption, emissions and increased energy efficiency. In this work, three (3) improved biomass cookstoves with different combustion chamber materials (aluminium, ceramic clay and mild steel) were designed, developed and tested under the Water Boiling Test (WBT) protocol. The stoves design specifications were carefully altered to prevent significant variations in performance. The energy efficiency, specific fuel consumption and emission performance parameters of the three stoves indicated the ceramic clay combustion chamber as the material of choice in achieving the set target of Tier 2 of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)/Technical Report (TR) 19867–3:18 voluntary performance targets.
