Comparison of Rheology and Morphology of Medicinal Creams or Ointments for External Application

Rheological parameters and morphologies of original and generic creams and ointments for external application containing the active ingredients methylprednisolone acetonate or a combination of betamethasone dipropionate, gentamicin sulfate, and clotrimazole were compared. Flow rheometry at various temperatures was used to measure viscosity curves, thixotropic rheograms, and frequency dependences of the elastic and viscosity moduli of both medicines. The morphologies of the medicines were also evaluated by optical microscopy. The differences in the rheological and morphological properties were most significant between Triderm, Akriderm GC, and Canison Plus creams and between Triderm and Akriderm GC ointments. Advantan and Comfoderm ointments belonged to different dispersion classes so that their morphologies and rheological parameters differed significantly.
