Encapsulation of Health-Monitoring Agent in Poly-Methyl-Methacrylate Microcapsules using Supercritical Emulsion Extraction

Abstract Supercritical emulsions extraction (SEE-C) technology was used to produce PMMA/diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A microcapsules acting as a health-monitoring element. A comparison between SEE-C and solvent evaporation was carried out. Best results were obtained using SEE-C: spherical microcapsules with a smooth surface and a mean size of 220 nm, with an encapsulation efficiency up to 79%, were obtained. SEE-C capsules preserve their stability for the entire time frame analyzed (30 days). Impact tests were carried out on strips of carbon fiber reinforced composites coated with an aqueous paint in which capsules were previously dispersed: dye leaking associated with capsules breaking was evidenced.
