Nanoparticles of Iron Oxides in Thin Films on the Surfaces of Natural Quartz Crystals

The results of studying the nanomorphology of thin films on the faces of quartz rhomboherons from the Sinilga ore occurrence (Subpolar Urals, Russia) are given. Monodisperse hollow nanoparticles of roundish shape constituted probably by iron oxides were discovered using atomic-force and electron microscopy. The hollow structure of nanoparticles was ascribed to the nanoscale Kirkendall effect. The role of iron bacteria was assumed as a factor controlling oxidation under the formation of nanoparticles in the films of the surfaces of natural crystals.
