Overview

If the weightiness of a topic can be measured by the persistence of observed discussion, surely the role of research in the professional life of the clinical medical physicist would rise to the top of any list of notable issues that we face. In this Point Counterpoint debate, we will hear from two medical physicists, each with standing in the worlds of both clinical practice and research effort. These Point Counterpoint contributions will focus on one aspect of our broader professional environment, the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process and whether or not that structure should be used to encourage (or require) research effort in clinical practice. The MOC concept and implementation has not been without controversy; adding the possibility of a research related requirement will certainly enliven the debate.

I offer thanks to our contributors, and note that they are writing in the classic style of a debate, the opinions that they argue may or may not reflect their personal views.

Arguing for the proposition is Christopher Njeh, Ph.D. Dr. Njeh was born in Cameroon and earned his BSc, MSc and PhD from Birmingham University, Aberdeen University and Sheffield Hallam University, UK, respectively. He has worked at the Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge and Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital, Birmingham, UK, as well as the Osteoporosis and Arthritis Research Group of the Department of Radiology at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Njeh completed a medical physics residency at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. He has since served as Chief Medical Physicist at Texas Oncology in Tyler, TX and held adjunct faculty positions at the University of Texas at Tyler, and California State University Fresno. He is currently Chief Medical Physicist at Franciscan Health, Indianapolis, Indiana, and is adjunct faculty at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Njeh is certified in Therapeutic Radiologic Physics by the ABR. His major research interests include Osteoporosis, image‐guided radiation therapy and accelerated partial breast irradiation. He is an author or co‐author of over 70 peer‐reviewed journal articles and 10 book chapters and is co‐editor of two books. He is an Associate Editor of the British Journal of Radiology.

Arguing against the proposition is Michael Silosky, M.S. Mr. Silosky is an Associate Professor in the department of Radiology at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine, Anschutz Medical Campus. He received his B.S. in Physics from the University of Illinois at Champaign‐Urbana and his M.S. from the University of Texas, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Houston. Before completion of his graduate studies, Mr. Silosky worked for over six years as a physics technologist (physics assistant) at M.D. Anderson Cancer center in the Department of Imaging Physics. While working as both a diagnostic and nuclear medicine physicist, Mr. Silosky serves as a Vice‐Chair of the AAPM Online Learning Services Sub‐Committee as well as AAPM's Liaison to the RSNA Educational Exhibits Committee. His professional and research interests include medical image display technology and quality assurance.
