Flow regimes and mixing characteristics in non-aligned T-jets reactors

Abstract Flow regimes and mixing characteristics in non-aligned T-jets reactors were investigated by Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) at 30 ≤ Re ≤ 400. The misalignment of inlet jets in non-aligned T-jets reactors leads to a steady engulfment flow at low Reynolds numbers. With the increase of Re, the unsteady engulfment flows with different oscillation behaviors occur. Unlike the vortex-merging oscillation in reactors of ws/h = 0 and 0.5 (ws and h are the misalignment degree and height of inlet jets), an S-shaped self-excited oscillation is identified in reactor of ws/h = 1. Mixing in non-aligned T-jets reactors is quantified by time-averaged Intensity of Segregation (IOS) and the mixing mechanism is revealed. The mixing is significantly enhanced in non-aligned T-jets reactors at low Re due to the earlier emergence of the steady engulfment flow. Both the vortex-merging oscillation in reactors of ws/h = 0 and 0.5 and the S-shaped self-excited oscillation in reactor of ws/h = 1 contribute to the mixing enhancement.
