Development of the Foundations of a Technology for Producing Low-Ash Graphite from High-Carbon Rocks of Primorskii Krai

Abstract The potential of purification of natural graphite by a hydrodifluoride technology was studied by the example of treatment of deposits of the Southern Far East of Russia. It was determined that impurities contained in graphite can be nearly completely fluorinated with a 20% excess of NH 4 HF 2 . The formed complex ammonium fluoride salts and alkali metal fluorides are removed from the fluorinated concentrate by leaching with water. Treatment of the purified product with ammonium sulfate at 300–350°C gives graphite containing up to 99.9% carbon.
