Processing of Nitric Acid Solutions to Produce Bismuth Nitrate Pentahydrate

Abstract

The methods for producing bismuth pentahydrate from metallic bismuth by the interaction of oxide or basic bismuth nitrate with solutions of nitric acid were compared using X-ray phase, chemical, atomic absorption, mass spectrometric analyses, and electron microscopy. The possibility of preparing it from bismuth metal as a result of oxidation of the latter and processing of the produced oxide with a solution of nitric acid is shown. A variant of the preparation of bismuth pentahydrate is considered by preliminary hydrolytic purification of bismuth-containing nitric acid solutions by precipitation of bismuth in the form of oxohydroxonitrate and its interaction with nitric acid solutions. A technology has been developed to eliminate the emission of toxic nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere and to produce high purity bismuth pentahydrate.
