The Cherenkov detector is a key element of the particle identification system in the VES fixed target experiment at IHEP (Protvino). It consists of a 1.6 m R-22 gas radiator and a system of 28 mirrors with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) as photon detectors. This paper is giving an overview of a description of the detector design, its model used in a simulation, particle identification algorithm, and discussing procedures of obtaining calibration constants. The particle identification performance is demonstrated with the Monte-Carlo and experimental data analyses.
