Effect of clinoptilolite natural zeolite particles on the destabilization of the oil-in-water emulsion

Industrial emulsions are among the responsible factors for serious destructive environmental issues. Surfactants are considered as the stabilizing agents functioned in the emulsions through different processes. In this study, the effect of natural clinoptilolite zeolite particles added to dodecane-in-water emulsion was evaluated by investigating the surfactant-zeolite interaction to find the features of zeolite to destabilize the emulsion. Zeolite particles are anticipated to have capabilities for interaction with the surfactants stabilized the emulsion, resulting in their adsorption on the surfaces of zeolite particles based on the corresponding surface characteristics. The measurements of surface tension and interfacial tension showed the remarkable removal of cationic surfactant molecules from both the continuous phase and oil-water interface by adding zeolite particles. Also, those interactions created between the particles and cationic surfactants were evaluated by measuring the zeta potential and contact angle of zeolite particles, before and after they were added to the emulsion.
