Non‐tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous environmental bacteria isolated from soil, surface waters, urban water supplies, and houses. The genetic susceptibility to NTM is an essential part of pathogenesis as discussed elsewhere. Recognition of bacterial components by pattern‐recognition receptors (PRRs) plays a major role in the immune response upon bacterial infections.
