The effect of zirconium content on in vitro bioactivity, biological behavior and antibacterial activity of sol-gel derived 58S bioactive glass

In this study, the modified sol-gel derived Bioactive glasses (BGs) in 60% SiO2-(36-X)% CaO-4% P2O5-X% ZrO2 (which X = 0, 5 and 10 mol.%) quaternary system were synthesized. Structural and morphological analyses were performed by Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Afterwards, the compressive strength of synthesized BGs was evaluated. Moreover, 3-(4, 5dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and antibacterial studies were taken to prove that how the values of proliferation and differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells were changed by the addition of Zr. Results revealed a significant increase of antibacterial percentage in BG-5Zr in comparison to other BGs. The concentration of various ions and variation of pH values were measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and pH meter. Taken together, investigations led to suggest BG-5Zr as a high potential specimen for clinical application.
