Ambient-Environment Effect on the Polished Surfaces of OF4 and STK19 Optical Glasses

Environmentally induced changes in the state of polished surfaces of STK19 and OF4 optical glasses were studied by means of ellipsometry and IR-spectroscopy as well as by measuring the roughness of the samples. It is shown that the surface state changes immediately on completion of polishing and does not change during the entire holding period. Changes in the temperature and humidity bring about subsequent changes in the state of the surfaces. Surface treatment of optical glasses in HMDS (hexamethyldisilazane) vapor impedes corrosion from occurring in the glass bulk and prevents roughness from increasing.
