Abstract In the recent years, the construction of urban infrastructure projects has developed rapidly. When the structure systems of these major infrastructures are subjected to various horizontal loads during operation, it may cause permanent lateral deformation of the pile and instability and damage of the foundation soil. Therefore, it is important to study the interaction of pile-soil system under horizontal load in the pile foundation design, which can provide reference for the design of pile foundation and guide for engineering practice. Based on Vesic expansion theory and according to the actual stress state of the surrounding soil during the horizontal displacement of the pile foundation, the formula of the soil resistance force on the pile side of compression zone are derived, the p-y curve model based on stress increment is established, and the applicability of the calculation method through examples verification are demonstrated in this paper. It is concluded through analysis that when the theoretical method proposed in this paper is applied to the calculation of mechanical response of the pile side soil under horizontal loads; the results of this method are in good agreement with the field measured data in model test, especially when a larger horizontal displacement the pile foundation has come up.
