Abstract The development of marine economy puts great pressure on marine ecology and is a key issue in the ocean utilization of large marine ecosystems (LMEs) or that of nations. Therefore, a better evaluation method for the relationship between the marine economy and ecology is necessary to realize sustainable ocean development. Taking Shanghai as the study area, this study proposes a coupling coordination degree model and builds an index system weighed using the information entropy method to analyze this relationship from 2005 to 2014. The results show that the relationship between the marine economy and ecology has evolved from seriously or moderately unbalanced into a barely balanced one. The analysis of this study has important implications for analyzing the economy and ecology of LMEs and achieving sustainable development of the ocean.
