This special issue celebrates the legacy of Bob McCarley’s pioneering efforts to combine high-spatial resolution measures of brain structure from MRI with high-temporal resolution neurophysiological measures of brain function, with an eye towards associating these brain-based structural and functional abnormalities with the severity of various psychotic symptoms, cognitive dysfunction, and social and occupational disabilities affected individuals suffer. In addition to his unquestioned brilliance in science (Dr. McCarley ran two world renowned laboratories, one in basic animal sleep neurophysiology and one in human neuroimaging), Bob had a remarkable and laudatory talent for identifying excellent young scientists to join his group and help develop the multimodal imaging program. In this issue, I have collected manuscripts from many of Dr. McCarley’s former mentees that have gone on to establish their own laboratories and programs of research based on their training in multimodal imaging with the McCarley group. Below, brief descriptions of each of the major contributors’ time with the McCarley group are presented, along with their subsequent career trajectories. I hope this presents an idea of the influence Dr. McCarley and his collaborators have had in clinical neuroscience.
