Quantitative determination of the penetration of a silica-based consolidant in a limestone by FTIR spectroscopy

Abstract An ideal treatment for the conservation of stonework must provide an adequate depth of penetration into its pore structure. Therefore, in order to confirm the effectiveness of such treatments, the distribution and concentration of the consolidant inside the stone must be quantified. In the methods proposed in the literature, only the relative quantities of consolidant are determined. A methodology has yet to be developed to determine the concentration of the consolidant within the material. In the work described here, a direct and reagent-free analytical methodology to quantify consolidant in a limestone is proposed. The methodology, by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), involved performing absorbance measurements on samples as KBr pellets. The procedure was based on the ratio between the absorbance of a characteristic band of the consolidant and that of an internal standard (potassium ferricyanide). A comparison of the results with those obtained by Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (WDXRF), a well-stablished quantitative technique, showed a satisfactory correlation and sensitivity.
