Fatigue assessment of additively manufactured AlSi10Mg laser beam welded to rolled EN AW-6082 T6 sheet metal

Abstract Four different types of dissimilar, laser beam welded joints made of additively manufactured AlSi10Mg and conventionally manufactured EN AW-6082-T6 at 2 mm thickness have been assessed by the nominal and notch stress approaches. Fatigue results, for butt joints and lap joints with fillet welds, fulfil the lowest fatigue class for conventional aluminum welds of FAT 12. Conventionally welded lap joints, where the laser beam is driven through the sheets, show a significantly lower fatigue strength under shear and peel loading. Exisiting fatigue classes for notch stresses can only be applied for these joints in the long life fatigue regime.
