Overall water electrolysis is accomplished in an asymmetric acid/alkaline electrolyzer consisting of a bipolar membrane sandwiched by two symmetric, self-supported bifunctional cobalt-nickel phosphide nanowire electrodes, with a cell voltage of 1.55?V for a “regular” membrane and of only 0.841?V for an “irregular” membrane with unintentional crossover, to deliver 10?mA/cm2.
