Abstract The anti-corrosion behaviour of an inorganic passive film on galvanised steel was improved by modified graphene oxide (mGO). The corrosion current density and corrosion rate were both decreased by two orders of magnitude. Resistances to corrosive ion penetration and charge transfer were increased. Moreover, surface defects were modified, benefiting the decreased electrochemical activity of passive films. In addition, Mott–Schottky analyses showed reduced ionic and electronic conductivities of the passive films. This improved anti-corrosion behaviour was closely related to the effect of mGO on surface morphology modifications and charge-transfer inhibition during corrosion.
