This is a timely review in the context of current efforts to develop the concept of receiver psychology (Guildford and Dawkins 1991) more systematically and in a way that generates clear and testable hypotheses (Miller and Bee 2012). To a large extent, this means novel applications for some of the well-developed tools for quantitative analysis of behavior derived from psychology and cognitive science (Green and Swets 1966). These methods are usually framed independently of functional analyses of natural behavior. But increasingly these are being brought to bear on functional questions about the structure of animal sensory worlds (i.e., perception) (Wyttenbach and Hoy 1993; Schul and Sheridan 2006; Lee and Mason 2017). In this case, the focus is on categorical perception, for which the authors suggest several functional hypotheses.
