Thermoelastic bounds and self-consistent estimation for the overall properties of composites

Abstract In the present work, static thermoelastic bounds for a composite with spheroidal isotropic inclusions embedded in an isotropic matrix are calculated. Using the Green’s function derived for the thermoelastic case by Valdiviezo-Mijangos, et al., (2009) and the variational formulation for anisotropic composites developed by Willis (1992), thermoelastic bounds are explicitly obtained. In the case of the thermal expansion coefficient, the results are also compared with experimental data as well as with the Rosen-Hashin bounds. A good agreement among the bounds, the self-consistent method and the experimental data is shown.
