Excess Molar Enthalpies of Dimethyl sulfoxide or Sulfolane with Aliphatic/Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Abstract Measurements of excess molar enthalpies at the temperature 298.15 K were reported for binary mixtures of DMSO with benzene or isopropyl benzene or 1-hexyne or 2- hexyne or 3-hexyne as well as binary mixtures of sulfolane with benzene or isopropyl benzene or 1-hexyne at the temperature 303.15 K over the whole composition range. In all systems, the excess molar enthalpies are positive, corresponding to the endothermic mixing processes. The excess molar enthalpies data of the mentioned binary systems were used to investigate intermolecular interactions between polar molecules (DMSO and sulfolane) and aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. The results were discussed in terms of the self-association of DMSO and sulfolane, cross-association between the components in the binary mixtures as well as structural effects. Furthermore, the Redlich–Kister polynomial equation, were used to successfully correlate the experimental excess molar enthalpy data for all systems.
