The following paper "Glutamate activates GFAP gene promoter from cultured astrocytes through TGF‐β1 pathways" by Luciana Romão et al. (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/j.1471‐4159.2008.05428.x) is being corrected by agreement between the authors and the Editorial Office of the Journal of Neurochemistry.

The Editorial Office had been notified about duplications and inconsistencies in Figures 2 and 5 of the corrected paper, highlighted in the following figure:

The initial submission of the paper in November 2007 was followed by a revision of figures as per reviewer request. The manuscript was then published in 2008. The Editorial Office contacted the corresponding author Flávia Gomes and received the following explanation:

During the first round of revision, one of the reviewers suggested that Figures 4 and 5 of the submitted manuscript should be combined (Figure 5 in the published version). Figures 5b and 5f of the published manuscript are correct. They are exactly the same images submitted previously as Figure 5G and 5I (first submission). However, the lane with α‐TGF‐β1 has been removed (please see below in red square).

Figure 2 has been modified and part of Figure 5 of the first submitted version has been inappropriately incorporated into Figure 2 (lane α‐TGF). Four images of Figure 2 of the published manuscript are wrong (red X in image below). When preparing the modified version, the first author did not include the correct images already provided to the Journal as part of Figure 5 of the first version of submission. α‐TGF‐β1 lane in published Figure 2 (b, e , h) must be replaced by the α‐TGF‐β1 lane of Figure 5 of the first submission (see yellow, purple, and green square in the image below). Be aware of the different order of the columns between original Figure 5 (Control/Glutamate/TGF‐β1) and published Figure 2 (Control/TGF‐β1/Glu 100 μM). Originally published Figures 2a and 2c mistakenly showed the same condition (MCPG). Figure 2a is to be replaced by Figure 5a which is showing a correct control condition. Unfortunately, it was a mistake when preparing the second submission of the manuscript. After consulting the first author of the paper, she suggested fields from the same glass coverslip/well have been photographed and named incorrectly, by receiving names of different conditions (control and MCPG).

Note that the first line panels; a, d and g (Control/TGF‐β1/Glu 100 μM) are the same conditions (but different images) as already shown in Figure 5 of the published work (Control/Glutamate/TGF‐β1), respectively. It is worth to observe that there is no difference in the number of β‐gal positive cells between these two conditions (graphic). Further, quantifications have been done after detection of β‐galactosidase activity, directly at the microscopy (on site, not after imaging) (as described in the Materials and Methods); and images have been used to provide visual/representative illustration). The quantification graphic is the same provided in the version of the first submission. Although this fact does not minimize the seriousness of our mistake, we would like to guarantee that it does not impact the main conclusions of the paper.
