Interpretation of Hydrogeochemical Data using Hierarchical Cluster Analysis: A Case Study at Wadi El-Natrun, Egypt

Abstract Multivariate Statistical techniques have been widely applied in hydrogeology, geochemistry, and hydrology to identify commonalities or differences between large data sets. In this article, Hierarchical Cluster Analysis was performed on recent hydrogeochemical data (27 wells and 8 inland lakes) obtained at Wadi El-Natrun in April 2013 and April 2015. The purpose of this exercise was to understand the variability and similarities between ground and surface water quality in a less complex way. As well, to identify key variables in these environmental settings that could help to monitor the water quality of these resources. An additional purpose has been to shed some light, from a chemistry point of view, on the witnessed ‘salinization’ of these resources within this area. Overall, HCA provided an indication that both resources received had a potential water recharge during 2015 relative to 2013 that was supported by other regional reporting. Rearrangement of some surface water variables within clusters relative to groundwater was indicative of topsoil mineralization as well as the change in water levels due to recharge and/or evaporation.
