Linear donor with multiple flexible chains for dye-sensitized solar cells: Inhibition of dye aggregation and charge recombination

Abstract Although the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) has made remarkable progress in the past decade, so far, a series of problems caused by dye aggregation is still a considerable challenge. To solve this problem, we designed two linear coplanar aromatic compounds with multiple flexible chains, 511-dihydroindeno[1,2-b]carbazole and 612-dihydroindeno[1,2-b]fluorene as the donor units. The research focuses on the accurate evaluation of the key factors affecting dye aggregation and charge recombination, including co-adsorption experiment, electronic impedance test, and open-circuit voltage decay (OCVD) test. The results show that the introduction of multiple alkyl groups into the donor framework helps to control dye aggregation to reduce exciton quenching, and helps to passivate the surface of TiO2 to promote the delay of charge recombination. The open-circuit voltage (Voc) of both ZS01 and ZS02-based DSSCs exceeds 700 mV, which indicates that the linear unit modified by alkyl is expected to be a strong candidate for high-efficiency sensitizer and also provides a new idea for the design of the donor moiety.
