Preparation of ZrB2 powders by a novel green silicothermic reduction method

Phase pure ZrB2 powder was synthesized via a novel green silicothermic reduction method using ZrO2, Na2B4O7 and Si as raw materials. By introducing sodium oxysalt as source of Na2O into the reactant mixture, the original water-insoluble byproduct SiO2, which was difficultly eliminated from resultant product in the conventional silicothermic reduction process, was transformed into water soluble Na2Si2O5, making it much easy to remove from the reacted mass via simple hot water washing. The introduction of Na2O into the system enabled a lower reduction reaction temperature at 1000 ​°C, which reducing about 200 ​°C than that of the initial reaction system. Furthermore, the above method could improve the crystal growth of submicron ZrB2 with a regular hexagonal sheet.
