Microglia and Tanycytes of the Infundibular Recess of the Brain in Early Postnatal Development and during Aging

Abstract— Structure and spatial relationships of microglia and tanycytes in the mediobasal hypothalamus in early postnatal development and during aging were examined. Brain sections of Wistar rats at postnatal days 7, 14, and 30 and at the age of 4–5 (adult) and 20 months (aged) ( n = 3 for each time point) were studied using immunohistochemical methods. Different types of microglia were defined according to localization, morphological and functional features, and spatial relationships with tanycytes. Age-related changes in microglia activity were demonstrated in the area studied. The data will allow for revealing the role of microglia and tanycytes in the formation of barrier structures in the mediobasal hypothalamus and the age-related specifics of the central neuroimmunoendocrine regulations.
