Electrical breakdown characteristics in non-uniform electrode system with bakelite barrier under the lightning ımpulse voltage

Electrical breakdown voltage ( V BD ) and streamer propagation path characteristics in highly non-uniform electrode system were investigated to clarify the dielectric barrier effects. The experimental results showed that V BD is affected by both the barrier dimension and the barrier position. As the position of the dielectric barrier becomes closer to the needle electrode, the rising rate of V BD according to the barrier dimension increases. In addition, streamer propagation path could be identified into two categories, depending on the dielectric barrier position and the dimension. Finally, it is found that V BD s were determined by the electrical insulation structure, not the streamer propagation path or length.
